BALSAM POPLAR
Populus balsamifera or populus tacamahaca

Is a large deciduous tree 23 - 30 metres high with oval leaves and finely toothed and sharply pointed tip.  The balsam poplar has a quick growth which make it able to grow adventerious roots.  Adventerious roots are roots that are made to absorb water.   The balsam poplar has shallow roots so it can be easily uprooted.  The balsam poplar can grow from Alaska all the way to Newfoundland and Labrador and even Europe!  My tree when burned down will make sprouts from its roots and make new trees.  Balsam poplars are used primarily to put around parks and get hybred with other trees such as Cottonwoods for producing wood.  The balsam poplar has buds similar to the Gilead poplar.  The inner bark is used for the sweetness and juice which is the only part people eat other then the seeds which are high in protein and fat.
